What Do We Mean By Tall & Wide Windows?

When we say “tall and wide windows,” we mean any window that expands beyond standard size. When you’re designing outside of the box, window treatments become a new ballgame. This choice requires a little more creativity, as well as additional considerations such as safety, efficiency, and temperature control. 

These installations may require a little more work on the front end, but we promise they’re worth it. Big, sweeping windows are the epitome of luxury, and instantly create a modern appeal.

Real quick — we’re not encouraging you to start snooping around your neighbors’ houses. We mean check out what’s popular in your local area! You’ll find tall and wide windows a lot more often in Colorado than in other states. Why? Because we have the amazing views, (duh.) But really, tall and wide windows are the best way to get a closer look at the outdoors while inside. They also give the illusion of more space, and will bring a gorgeous amount of light to your home.

We’re seeing this design choice more and more in CO homes, and there seems to be a few clear frontrunners in terms of style. 

For one, sliding doors reign supreme. We don’t mean the janky sliding doors that we grew up with; we mean top-tier sliding doors.  Modern options that roll smoothly, are finished beautifully, and can take up the space of entire walls. Yes, please! 

Accordion-style doors are also a fun play on the old classic. This uber-modern option looks sleek and seamless when closed, and offers a surprisingly exciting aesthetic when opened. 

Palladium and A-Frame examples are often spotted as well. They may not be as contemporary as their counterparts; however, they’re a fabulous choice if you’re going for a more classic look.

It’s not uncommon to see two-story windows in Colorado either — like we said, who doesn’t want to appreciate the scenery? These massive windows deliver a view of epic proportions, but be mindful; this choice will bring the heat, and not in a good way. Luckily, the right treatments can cover that problem right up. 

Extra-Large Windows Mean Extra Consideration

There are more factors to consider when committing to tall and wide windows. You’ll need to pay closer attention to the efficiency, function, and light control that various treatments offer. Because of this, we’ve narrowed down our favorites to a select few:

Curtains and Drapes:

This way looks effortlessly stylish and can dramatically change the aesthetic of a room. This option is also the easiest — curtains can be custom-made to any size or design. Some curtains or drapes are also insulated, thus helping with temperature control. They’re bold, elegant, low maintenance, and practical. So, a definite win in our book. 

Vertical Blinds:

This option works well for both big windows and glass doors. They open sideways, making this choice super user-friendly and modifiable. Aesthetically, there are many moves you can make within the category of vertical blinds. They can be made of anything from aluminum to fabric-coated materials. For especially efficient treatments, try a motorized version. 

Solar Shades:

For the most efficient option in every sense of the word, solar shades take the cake. With these you’ll get UV protection, glare reduction, seamless function, and fabulous light control. Roller Shades:

Similar to solar shades, roller shades also offer precise coverage and a contemporary aesthetic. With these, however, you can have a little more fun in terms of their material and design. They’re like solar shades, but with a little more room for creativity.

Any of the aforementioned treatments are a fantastic way to go. Whichever route you take, we recommend going for a custom creation. In fact, depending on the size of your windows, that may be your only option.
